How fly can one trio be? Well, clearly fly enough to be called “The Fly Guys”. Tone, Enimal and DJ B make up this unique trio, who love to have fun, party and work its craft. FLY is defined by The Fly Guys as ‘always having something extra to strive for…having fun with life but never settling’. They are still striving while on the grind.
Tone has been writing since he was 10; Enimal started with the piano and has been producing from a young age; DJ B has been deejaying since he was 11. All, in their 20s now, have studied their craft, written their own lyrics and continue to put in a lot of man hours to get the job done. These three enterprising gentlemen met up at Westchester High in Los Angeles: they began rapping there while in high school, where they also began honing in on their freestyling skills.
After three (3) years of collaborating, The Fly Guys find their style to be fun and positive: “We want people our age and beyond to have fun too. We want our audience to relate to us and never take themselves too seriously when listening to our music”. “Hey Keisha”, an upbeat tune on the highly anticipated album from The Fly Guys is the first song that got people’s attention. Another song, “Can’t Wait” is mid-tempo and serves as an inspirational and honest ode to the music business, which discusses how hard work pays off while waiting for their big break, and “Young Fly Players” is a bravado cut of sorts and horn heavy, telling the story of how they live their lives-dealing with chicks, navigating life, and being the hot dudes.
While these guys are still young in the business, they can’t help but be a little jaded. They convey that, as fledgling artists, when searching out someone to help, so many people are just selling dreams and not about their business. They learned early that people do not always have integrity in the music biz so they combat this by continuously working hard so that people can’t help but be excited about being a part of their project.
At present, The Fly Guys count performing among their favorite things to do. They say: “We love the feeling that we have being on stage…being able to express ourselves on the track. We love doing music and people reacting positively make us feel happy. We are not just doing this for us…we know someone else can relate”.
For those who can relate, what would The Fly Guys tell young people that want to do what they do? “Pursue your dreams while you can and have no regret. Nobody is going to take you where you want to be other than yourself. Put your all into your music and give 100%…don’t depend on other people. You have to do your part”.
Tone names TI (due to his persistence), Will Smith (he is the center) and his grandmother (because of her wisdom) as some of his role models. Enimal counts Luda and Young Jeezy: “I believe what they say and they speak to the grind and what you have to do to get yours…hard work pays off”. Lastly, DJ B says Jay Z and Kanye are really dope rappers, but his mom is the one person who influences his decisions. Outside of their collective role models, they would like to work with Lauryn Hill, Pharrell, and Timbaland.
Next, The Fly Guys’ goal is to gain exposure so that they can garner some buzz, expand nationally, and ultimately become internationally known and respected-essentially continue to have growth and fly… Eventually, Tone wants to dabble in acting; Enimal would like to score for film; maybe, DJ B will, one day, model. As a last note: “We want the fans to know how much we appreciate them…We are real artists who make real music but still love to have a good time”. And that’s how they keep soaring and staying fly!
